| The kick-off
rally for the Immigrant Workers Freedom Ride in Chicago drew
a large, diverse crowd. Organizers put the total at 3,000, though
my guess would have been 1,500 or so. |
 |
| The rally was
held on a sunny Saturday morning. Community groups, such as ACORN
and the Illinois Hunger Coalition were particularly well represented,
but there were large union contingents from SEIU, UNITE!, HERE,
IBEW among others. |
 |
| There were counter
demonstrators across Dearborn as well. These were the relatively
sane folks. Later their numbers doubled with folks carrying "Free
Matt Hale" signs and even a huge Nazi flag. Yes, they even
chanted "Seig Heil!" for extended periods. |
 |
| Some of the rally
participants were.... colorful. |
 |
| Politics never
ceases. Here Teamsters Local 705's Jerry Zero confers with ACORN's
Madeline Talbott. |
 |
| We were nothing
if not ethnic at the rally. |
 |
| As anyone in politics can
tell you, the devil is in the details. |
