Welcome to the New Ground
Archive!
New Ground
is the publication of Chicago Democratic Socialists of America.
Unless the article is the text of an official resolution, the
opinions expressed are solely those of the authors and do not
necessarily represent the views of Chicago DSA.
This is a text archive of past issues.
There are few graphics and no frames; it's intended to be simple.
Aside from the universal accessibility of text, the main reason
for this minimalist approach is the volume of material in the
context of its construction being a spare time project.
Not all issues of New Ground are
included as the computer files for many of the earliest no longer
exist. Believe me, retyping or scanning and editing all of the
missing issues is not a realistic option.
A note for those interested in obscure
history: when the Democratic Socialist Organizing Committee (DSOC)
merged with the New American Movement in 1982, the Chicago DSOC
chapter's newsletter, Turn Left, became the newly merged
Chicago DSA newsletter. This was a modest mimeographed affair
that lasted no more than one or two issues past the birth of the
new organization. I don't know of anyone who has a complete collection
of Turn Left. Turn Left was replaced by The Chicago
Socialist, a union printed bi-monthly (mostly) magazine that
was published from 1982 through 1984. Likewise, I don't know of
anyone who has a complete collection of this publication. The
Chicago Socialist was replaced by DSA News. This was
in fact a newsletter that was issued usually monthly from
1985 through most of 1987 when it was replaced by New Ground.
Rather more ephemeral (but photocopied rather than mimeographed)
than The Chicago Socialist, any complete collection of
DSA News would be a surprise.
If you're looking for something in particular,
I'd recommend Google as a search engine. Using their advanced
search options, you can restrict your seach to chicagodsa.org.
Or, feel free to ask, though I can't always guarantee a speedy
response. Students doing papers should note that this site has
been indexed by turnitin.com,
so be sure to cite your sources!
New Ground
(the print edition) is distributed free to Chicago DSA members,
but snail mail subscriptions are available, costing $10 for 6
issues. Send a check or mail order made payable to Chicago
DSA to:

If money is a problem, some browsers,
such as Internet Explorer, will allow you to "subscribe"
to a particular site, that is, to notify you if a page or a site
has been changed. You might do that for this index page or for
the pdf version of the print edition (see below).
A third option is to add
yourself to the Chicago DSA mailing list. You will receive
announcements of Chicago DSA campaigns, events, and notice of
when the latest issue is posted on the web.
