This Week in the CDSA (August 26 – September 1)

Posted By | Categories This Week

Good Morning Chicago DSA,

I hope everybody had an excellent week last week. I know I personally had a great time on Wednesday at the North Side Steering Committee elections. Hopefully, if you’re a member who lives on the North Side you were able to make it out. It was an hour and a half of rousing debate topped off with some good ol’ democracy. Congrats to our new North Side Steering Committee! I’d list them but there’s nine of them! Too many to list here imo but you should have gotten an email earlier this week with all the details.
Also, while I may be writing this email before it’s happened, I’m sure the Cooperative Economy Summit yesterday was a big success. Fantastic job to all involved with organizing that.
Coming up this week, we’ve got a good list of events. One that stands out is the first Electoral Working Group Candidate Interview meeting. Come if you’re interested in hearing from candidates who are seeking CDSA’s endorsement!
As usual, all the event information is below. I’ll see you out there, comrades!

Monday, August 27

  • Communications Committee Meeting; 7 PM – 8:30 PM; Chicago DSA Office; 3411 W. Diversey Ave
Join the CDSA Communications Working Group for our August meeting. We’ll be voting on new officers this election as well as bylaws updates. We’ll also be discussing our website/tech, social media, agitprop, video, podcast, and our print publications. We’ve got a lot of projects to work on, and if you’ve never been to a CDSA meeting before, the smaller working group meetings are a great way to get involved. Our meetings are open to members and non-members, and we hope you’ll join us! If it’ll be your first meeting, let us know at so that we can you get you involved as best as possible!

  • Community Councils Working Group; 6:30 PM – 8:30 PM; Harold Washington Library; 400 S. State St.; 6th Floor South Study Room
Community Councils Working Group is catalytic space to facilitate a discussion and development of self-governing neighborhood assemblies as a platform for collective democratic empowerment. Our approach involves coalition building within our own communities while using group meetings to share best practices and improve our local organizing strategies.

Tuesday, August 28

  • Electoral Working Group – Candidate Interviews; 6:30 PM – 9 PM; UE Hall; 37 S. Ashland Ave.
Our endorsement process is in full swing and at this meeting we will be interviewing some of the candidates who have sought out endorsement thus far. There will be another meeting to interview the remaining candidates soon. Please come to get a chance to hear more from candidates and learn about how they plan to bring our socialist vision to the city!

Wednesday, August 29

  • Environmental Justice Working Group Meeting; 7 PM – 8:30 PM; Chicago DSA Office; 3411 W. Diversey Ave.
The Environmental Justice Working Group’s August meeting. We will be discussing the Illinois Coalition Against Fracking as well as the upcoming ComEd contract.
  • North Side Healthcare Working Group Meeting; 7 PM – 8:30 PM; Sulzer Library; 4455 N. Lincoln Ave
Meeting to discuss ongoing Medicare for All campaign among other goings on in the Healthcare Working Group.
  • Are you looking into getting more involved in the Comms Working Group? Are you interested in spreading the word about socialism and the work of CDSA? We are looking for new members to join the CDSA Social Media Team! If you’re interested, please fill out this questionnaire, with a few questions regarding availability and some sample prompts to help gauge your interest level:
The deadline to fill out the questionnaire is end of day Thursday the 23rd. If you have any questions about the google doc or the Social Media team, please reach out to Andrew Anderson
  • Midwest Socialist podcast: Sentimental Re-education
Sarah and André talk to Chicago DSA Political Education coordinator Ramsin Canon and co-host of the “Season of the Bitch” podcast Ambria Taylor about what Marxism means in our modern time. We define/talk about what terms like “alienation” and “materialism” really mean and walk through a timeline of how capitalism developed. We also talk about how Marxist theory can inform real world organizing.

  • Labor History Educational Call; August 29; 7 PM
Curious about the history of disruptive actions and organizing pulled off in the workplace by our socialist predecessors? Join Harrisburg DSA member and labor historian James Young for an overview of socialists in American labor history. This will be the first in a Democratic Socialist Labor Commission series on socialists in labor history; later calls will look at more specific events and struggles. We will be recording this call and eventually it will be available with other resources on our new labor website (in progress).
Register in advance for this meeting: After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting.
