🟥 Red Square #3 🟥 New Member Engagement & Political Development

August 15 @ 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm CDT

The Red Square Series is a space where CDSA members can learn about the political debates socialists and other radicals and progressives are having, and develop a productive, comradely format for discussion and debate that can both inform members and improve our collective analysis.
Our third topic will be on the following:

How should we in Chicago DSA think about new member engagement, and especially about political development? That can include political education, but also involves mentoring, and creating leadership opportunities. It includes questions about retention and bringing folks of color into the organization, and making CDSA a source of true solidarity, with and including people across many marginalized identities.

This topic featured heavily in last month’s branch steering committee candidate forums, but is relevant to our broader membership—whether you’re a Rose Buddy mentor, planning Socialist Night School curricula, or talking to your neighbors about why you’re not getting any rent relief right now. If you’ve heard these questions being asked wherever you’ve been involved with CDSA, how have those conversations gone? What sort of action have you seen or not seen come out of asking those questions?

For this month’s Red Square, be ready to think about this topic both on the level of specific answers to these questions, and on a broader level of how these sorts of discussions can be had most productively.
