Black Lives Matter: Educational Equity or Else!

June 24 @ 12:00 pm - 3:00 pm CDT

The racism that snatched the future from George Floyd and countless others is the same racism that fuels the sabotage of education for Black, Brown, indigenous and working-class children. Our mayor and our school district have refused to address education inequity. The only way schools will open safely and equitably for Black, Brown, Indigenous and working class children is if we – as parents, educators and students – inform and drive the reopening.

We demand that the mayor and CPS:

>> Remove all police from Chicago Public Schools beginning in the ‘20-’21 school year; re-invest the $33 million currently allocated for the CPD contract in non-police supportive services for students, including counselors, nurses, and restorative justice coordinators; ensure all students have access to technology and internet for at-home learning during the COVID-19 pandemic, and when school begins;

>> Guarantee adequate cleaning for our schools; adequate soap, water and disinfectant for students and workers; PPE for all; temperature checks and adequate staffing of health professionals in our school buildings; and social distancing strategies that protect students, their families and workers (for example, smaller class sizes);

>> Invest in Sustainable Community Schools as a condition for reopening schools this fall;

>> Invest in affordable housing and economic development for students and their families.

We are declaring ZERO TOLERANCE for racial inequity!
