Chicagoans’ need for electricity makes ComEd a lot of money – hundreds of millions of dollars for shareholders, millions more towards lobbying in Chicago and Illinois. Some of those lobbying practices are under scrutiny in the past few months, and have resulted in the three federal investigations of ComEd around corruption and bribery. And now, in the midst of a pandemic, Chicagoans’ access to energy is under threat due to the economic struggles this crisis has imposed showing the fragility of privately-owned energy.
But Chicago is not stuck with ComEd. The city’s contract with ComEd is up in 2020. A city council vote can replace ComEd with a democratically-controlled, city electrical utility. But it won’t happen without pressure from us.
If this is surprising to you, if you want to learn more about the power grid, if you want a green new deal for Chicago, join us on April 26th to learn what it means to Democratize ComEd.
Democratize ComEd is a campaign of Chicago DSA and its allies. If you would like to learn more, please visit our website at www.demcomed.org or follow us on social media at @DemComEd.
