Red Review #2: “You’ve Got Mail” & RomComs

August 16 @ 12:00 pm - 1:30 pm CDT

The Red Review is a series of interactive events that allow CDSA members to engage with socialist ideas through lively collective discussion, debate, and critique of pop-culture phenomenon.

Our next event is a discussion of romantic comedies and of the 1998 Nora Ephron film “You’ve Got Mail.” The film updates the 1940 classic “The Shop Around the Corner,” with America’s Dad™ Tom Hanks and America’s Sweetheart™ Meg Ryan striking up an online romance without realizing they are real-life business rivals. The film provides an opportunity to discuss not only the role of class and heteronormative relationships in romantic comedies, but also the gentrification of New York and American cities, as Hanks’ corporate bookstore chain threatens to put Ryan’s family bookstore out of business (but don’t worry, they’ll still end up together).

Red Review exists because we believe a rigorous (but not self-serious) engagement with mass culture can help us develop critical insights regarding capitalism and the state of the world. We believe that this kind of critical engagement augments our thinking and analyses as socialists. Red Review will introduce socialist thought, principles, and analytical tools to new members and others looking beyond more conventional education formats.

Please watch the film on your own time, grab your preferred brunch provisions, and join us for a lively discussion!
