Red Review #4: Dawn(s) of the Dead (1978 & 2004)

October 31 @ 3:00 pm - 4:30 pm CDT

The Red Review is a series of interactive events that allow CDSA members to engage with socialist ideas through lively collective discussion, debate, and critique of pop-culture phenomenon.

Our next event is a special horror-themed Red Review for Halloween: “Dawn(s) of the Dead,” a discussion of George Romero’s 1978 zombie classic “Dawn of the Dead” and the 2004 remake by Zack Snyder. Romero’s film, in which survivors of a zombie outbreak take shelter in a suburban shopping mall, is considered a horror masterpiece and a, well, biting satire of a failed consumerist society from a director whose films often showed left-wing sympathies. By contrast, Snyder went on to direct the not-so-left-wing “300” and “Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice.” What do these films tell us about consumerism, capitalism and horror movies in their respective eras? And does a zombie movie take on new resonance during a real-life global pandemic?

Red Review exists because we believe a rigorous (but not self-serious) engagement with mass culture can help us develop critical insights regarding capitalism and the state of the world. We believe that this kind of critical engagement augments our thinking and analyses as socialists. Red Review will introduce socialist thought, principles, and analytical tools to new members and others looking beyond more conventional education formats.

Please watch the films on your own time, grab your preferred drinks and candy, put on a costume for Halloween and join us for a lively discussion!
