Red Review Session 1: Inside Man

July 19 @ 11:00 am - 1:00 pm CDT

The Red Review is a series of interactive events that allow CDSA members to engage with socialist ideas through lively collective discussion, debate, and critique of pop-culture phenomenon.

Our first event is a discussion of Spike Lee’s 2006 heist film “Inside Man,” which predates the 2007-2008 financial crisis but taps into the simmering anger that would explode following the collapse. The film explores both the rotten foundation of global financial capitalism and the ways capitalists use philanthropy to disguise the nature of their ill-gotten gains. But what is the role of the police in the film, and what is the role of the heist film in liberal capitalist pop culture in general? Do heist films showcase rebellions against capitalists, or do they follow the same winner-takes-all mentality?

Red Review exists because we believe a rigorous (but not self-serious) engagement with mass culture can help us develop critical insights regarding capitalism and the state of the world. We believe that this kind of critical engagement augments our thinking and analyses as socialists. Red Review will introduce socialist thought, principles, and analytical tools to new members and others looking beyond more conventional education formats.
Please watch the film (currently available to stream on Netflix) on your own time, grab your preferred brunch provisions, and join us for a lively discussion!
