Red Review Session #3: The Simpsons

September 13 @ 12:00 pm - 1:30 pm CDT

The Red Review is a series of interactive events that allow CDSA members to engage with socialist ideas through lively collective discussion, debate, and critique of pop-culture phenomenon.

Our next event is a discussion of the “The Simpsons,” now a cultural institution lacking much flavor or sense of purpose but once a lively, funny and wildly inventive parody of the American sitcom that skewered everything from pop culture to politics. This session will look at three episodes from the show’s classic 1990s run – “Scenes from the Class Struggle in Springfield” (season 7, episode 14), “The PTA Disbands!” (season 6, episode 21) and “You Only Move Twice” (season 8, episode 2) – and examine the show’s depiction of the American Dream: what it is, who it works for and who it fails.

Red Review exists because we believe a rigorous (but not self-serious) engagement with mass culture can help us develop critical insights regarding capitalism and the state of the world. We believe that this kind of critical engagement augments our thinking and analyses as socialists. Red Review will introduce socialist thought, principles, and analytical tools to new members and others looking beyond more conventional education formats.

Please watch the episodes on your own time, then join us for a lively discussion over brunch! Food and drink will be provided, by you, for you, in your own home, and are highly encouraged!
