Tell the Public Safety Committee: #CPACnow!

March 10 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm CDT

This Tuesday, the mayor’s insultingly weak police oversight reform ordinance will be introduced to the Public Safety Committee. If passed out of this committee, it will be on its way to being voted on by City Council. It is vital that we show up to say that this ordinance is nowhere near good enough, and that it is an affront to the movement for true community control of the police in Chicago. We won’t stop until we get #CPACnow!

The ordinance that will be introduced Tuesday is expected to be a watered-down version of the “Community Commission for Public Safety and Accountability” ordinance (CCPSA, sometimes known as “GAPA”). This ordinance retains all the real power over CPD in the Office of the Mayor, creating an elected board whose powers are limited to issuing recommendations. We regard this ordinance as mere window dressing on the current oversight system, designed to boost Lightfoot’s progressive optics while doing nothing to disrupt business as usual.

CDSA, as part of a broad coalition of anti-racist, socialist, and progressive organizations around the city (The Chicago Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression), endorses the CPAC ordinance, which currently has 19 co-sponsors in city council. In contrast with the Mayor’s Bill, CPAC creates a democratically elected civilian board and gives this board all the real power over important policing decisions.
