Whose Side Are They On? Getting Cops Out of the Labor Movement

June 25 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm CDT

With the explosive resurgence in the fight against police brutality, new space is opening up to challenge the role of so-called police “unions” in the labor movement. Police unions across the country — such as the Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) in Chicago — have used their bargaining power not to protect workers, but to protect cops from misconduct charges and to funnel city budgets towards their racist institution.

Here, rank-n-file leaders in the Chicago Teachers Union are pushing to get cops out of schools, while other labor militants have begun confronting the FOP in our city. But, debates persist in the labor movement about the role of cop associations.

As socialists, it’s important we study the reactionary history of police unions and equip ourselves to answer tough questions. How did cop unions like the FOP get so powerful? How did historic strike breakers join some of our biggest labor associations? And, what can we do as union members and socialists to fight against their power and help build an anti-racist labor movement?

The CDSA Labor Branch in conjunction with the Political Education Committee will be facilitating this educational event for DSA members and allies.
